The Unikko design was created by Maija Isola in 1964 and has since become an international symbol of print design. Marimekko's founder, Armi Ratia, believed that capturing the true essence of real flowers in print was impossible, which is why floral prints were previously excluded from Marimekko collections. To address this, Maija Isola designed Unikko as an abstraction of a flower rather than a photorealistic depiction. Today, Unikko stands as a powerful emblem of joy and creativity, seamlessly integrated into Marimekko's design identity.
